A coequal religion, or paritism, is a classification of religion in which the founder, its main figures or the religion itself through its natural development comes to represent a synthesis of both religious and philosophical aspects that play integral, coequal and codependent roles in the formation of the identity of that system.
Every religion holds a philosophy or philosophical aspect, but a coequal religion prioritises the balance between religious dogma and philosophical freethought which most traditional religions do not share. Coequal religions are characterised by their expressed desire for the synthesis and balanced coexistence of religion and philosophy within the system. Here is a list of belief systems considered to represent syntheses of religion and philosophy:
- Astronism
- Buddhism
- Confucianism
- Taoism
